A bog filter needs steady water flow across its planted media, but the right pump depends on more than its advertised gallons-per-hour rating. Choose a pump by calculating the bog filter’s target flow, measuring the total head height, allowing for tubing and fittings, and selecting a model that can handle the water conditions in your pond.

For most backyard systems, a continuous-duty pond pump with a controllable flow rate, adequate head capacity, and a protective intake screen is the most practical choice. Oversizing the pump can cause channeling, overflowing, or excessive water speed through the bog, while an undersized pump may not move enough water for effective filtration.

What to look for in a bog filter pump

Match the pump to the bog filter’s flow rate

Start with the flow rate recommended by the bog filter design or manufacturer. If no recommendation is available, use the bog’s volume, plumbing size, and desired turnover rate as starting points rather than choosing a pump at random.

A pump’s listed maximum flow is measured with little or no lift and minimal restriction. The actual flow will be lower once water travels upward through tubing, passes through elbows and valves, and enters the bog media.

A pump with adjustable output is useful because it lets you reduce flow if the bog overflows or increase it if the water level remains too low. If the pump is not adjustable, a properly sized valve can restrict output, but the pump should still be suitable for continuous operation with the plumbing arrangement recommended by its manufacturer.

If the bog filter is above the pond, consider what happens during a power outage. Water may drain back through the plumbing, and a check valve may not stop all backflow. The bog and pond should have enough freeboard to handle expected drainage without overflowing.
