Oil-filled pond pumps can be safe for fish when they are designed for pond use and their sealed motor housing is intact. The oil is normally contained inside the pump, not mixed with pond water. Because designs and oil formulations vary, check the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming any oil-filled pump is fish-safe. If you suspect a leak, disconnect the pump safely and stop using it.
