A pre-filter cage and a skimmer do different jobs. A cage surrounds or covers a pump’s intake to keep larger debris away from the impeller. A skimmer collects leaves and other floating debris at the pond’s surface; many designs also provide a place to install the pump. Depending on the equipment, you may use one or both.

Pre-filter cage versus pump in a skimmer
A pre-filter cage protects a pump intake from debris; a skimmer collects floating debris and may also house the pump. They do different jobs and can be used together.

FAQ
Does a pump in a skimmer still need a pre-filter cage?
Not always. A skimmer basket or filter material may provide enough protection, but some pumps or pond conditions call for an additional intake guard. Follow the pump and skimmer manufacturers’ instructions, and avoid adding a cage that restricts the pump’s intake.
Does a pre-filter cage replace a pond filter?
Usually not. A cage mainly catches larger debris before it reaches the pump. It does not necessarily provide the mechanical or biological filtration needed to keep pond water clear and healthy.
Can I put any pond pump in a skimmer?
No. Check that the pump fits the skimmer chamber, that its intake and outlet can be connected as intended, and that the skimmer and pump instructions allow that installation.
