Waterfall appearance is subjective, so use the feature manufacturer’s recommended flow when available. A small spillway may need a controlled, moderate flow, while a wider waterfall needs more water distributed across its width.
For a filter, follow the filter manufacturer’s recommended flow range. Too little flow may reduce circulation and filtration performance. Too much flow can push water through biological media too quickly, cause bypassing, or exceed the filter’s capacity.
A variable-flow pump is useful when you are unsure of the ideal setting or want to adjust the feature between seasons. A fixed-flow pump can be a practical choice when the required flow and head height are already known.
